Tasman’s Great Taste Cycle Trail has also proved to be a popular summer attraction, with trail counters recording 13,000 users during the 11 day Christmas and New Year period, compared with 9000 for the previous year. Chair of the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trust Gillian Wratt says Kaiteriteri is a particularly popular section, with user numbers tripling, compared with this period 12

months ago. Nicky McBride of Wheelie Fantastic, located at Mapua, says they’ve had a big increase of international cyclists. “We expect numbers to continue to grow. It is our fifth season and it is shaping up to be our busiest.” Tahuna Beach Holiday Park general manager Marcel Fekkes says that they have been “totally chocca,” and it’s the first time in years that they’ve had to turn people away. “It’s definitely busier than last year,” he says. “We’ve had an influx of international visitors this year, and a lot more walking traffic too – people have been wandering in asking for sites.” Motel Association of New Zealand Nelson branch administration officer John Gilbertson says the region’s motels have also been busy during the statutory break, but says it’s too early to tell what the season in total is going to be like. “It’s been going well, and we’ve been busy

so far,” he says. “We are predicting that the new airlines will make a difference.” The Abel Tasman National Park is also proving to be a hot spot, with a surge of both international and kiwi visitors this summer. Brendan Alborn, owner of Abel Tasman Aqua taxi, says they have been busier than last year, which he puts down to a combination of the New Zealand dollar being weak, better promotion from the tourism sector, and more kiwis out and about doing activities and spending more money. “It’s been a fantastic season,” he says. “There have just been so many people around. The season started early and has kicked on - it’s

been crazy.” He says the recent rain hasn’t made any impact on business either. “People tend to either guts the rain out, or pay attention to the forecast,” he says. “After a rainy day we’ll be inundated with people, so it averages out.” Vic Brew Bar general manager Phil Williams says the bar had an earlier start to the season and that his staff have noticed more overseas tourists this year. And it seems the good times may not be coming to an end just yet. Lynda says winter is also shaping up to be busy, especially with the arrival of Jetstar’s Nelson to Wellington flights and the return of some events, such as Light Nelson. Rob Evans says he’s been struck by how many people are in the airport throughout the day. “It’s just the consistency of it. We’re busy from the moment we open up at 6am right through to the last flight. It gets a bit cosy in here at times but it’s a good news story that shows the confidence in the region.”

The cowboys won’t be the only ones holding on for dear life at the Richmond Rodeo at the A and P Showground in Richmond on Saturday. The future of the Richmond Rodeo itself will also be hanging in the balance with organisers saying this year’s edition could be the last unless a big crowd turns out to save the day. Club president Ian Parkes says the rodeo has been losing money for the last three years and a fourth consecutive loss could spell the end for the event. Ian says the main reason for the losses has been the increasing costs associated with staging the rodeo combined with crowd numbers which have remained static at about 2000. “All the people who help out are volunteers but we still have to pay to get the officials here and provide their accommodation. We also have to transport the bulls up from North Canterbury and the broncs from Waimate and pay prize money for the competitors. “A lot of the administration costs have gone up too. It used to cost us $70 for a liquor licence now it costs us $700, so it all adds up.

Pet coffins a growing business

A retired Nelson businessman is meeting a growing demand for pet funeral caskets as more and more people want to give their deceased dogs, cats, budgies, rabbits and even donkeys a loving send off. Wal Dalley, aged 71, is making about 700 pet caskets a year from his Richmondbased workshop with most of his products going to Otago, Southland and NelsonTasman. He makes 17 different models of casket as well as memorial plaques for pets that can be engraved and placed on a tree or in the garden. Although Wal says vets are asked to dis-

pose of the majority of pets that die or get put down, a growing number of pet owners want something special for their deceased companions and place their ashes in a casket. That number has increased to about one in eight over the last 20 or 30 years, resulting in a demand for the small pet caskets that Wal makes in his container workshop on Gladstone Rd. "A lot of people treat their pets like a member of the family and don't like the idea of just disposing of them when they die," Wal says. "About one in eight pet owners get their deceased pets cremated and put their ashes in a casket instead, so there's quite a

demand for these things. "I make quite a few different models for all the different sized-dogs - if you make one for a Rottweiler it's got to be quite big. I've also made them for cats, budgies and rabbits, and I even made one for a donkey." Wal says he started making the caskets when he lived in Wingatui near Dunedin, where he owned a small business making farm gates for lifestyle blocks. He had earlier worked as a business manager for Haywrights and Knees Industries and run his own furniture shop in Dunedin. "The guy down the road started doing pet cremations and he asked me if I could repair one of the caskets and that's how we

got into making new ones. That was 12 years ago and now we've retired to Nelson and I'm still working, making about 700 a year." Wal also makes wooden stools, garden stakes and beehive boxes. He has even made some massage tables specifically designed for a masseuse who had limited movement in her artificial knee. "I get those sorts of jobs through word of mouth, but I only really want to work three mornings a week. I was managing a national business with 2000 staff when I was 34, but these days I'm working on my own out of a container and about six hours a day is my maximum."

Gold miners in the Tasman district are angry at claim jumpers who are costing them thousands of dollars by illegally dredging in areas where they don't have a permit. New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals, which regulates gold mining in this country, last year received three complaints about claim jumpers from permitted gold miners operating in rivers around the Tapawera district. All three miners had paid NZPM for a permit to mine gold in a section of river but then arrived at their mining sites to find that a claim jumper had already dredged the area. NZPM's principal compliance advisor Jackie Adams says "this is completely unacceptable” and he is warning claim jumpers that they face serious consequences if they are caught. "Under the Crown Minerals Act, any person who commits an offence of mining without an appropriate permit can face a term of imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to $400,000 on conviction. Jackie says the Tapawera gold miners he spoke to are "highly annoyed" that people are jumping their claims. Although all three permits were for small scale mining, he says the claim jumpers are effectively stealing gold from the Government and denying the permit holders a potential income. "They have paid a couple of thousand dollars for the permit and then pay $500 a year for fees and royalties on top of that. You can understand why they are annoyed - I imagine it could get quite heated if they found one of these claim jumpers on their site." However, Jackie concedes that there may be some confusion over the issue because Tasman District Council states in its plan that small scale mining with a suction dredge is a permitted activity and doesn’t require a resource consent. He says council needs to make it clear that the government automatically owns all gold and it is illegal to mine for gold without getting a permit from NZPM. "I've spoken to the council to try and clear up any possible confusion and they have said they will look into it. We don't want to convict anyone when they genuinely think they aren't doing anything illegal." It is the second time that claim jumpers have hit the headlines around Tapawera, after a Nelson gold miner complained that at least $100,000 of gold had been taken illegally from his mining operation on the Tadmor River in 2013. The man had a 10 year permit to mine 7.9 hectares of the river, but claimed half a dozen other miners moved in with their suction dredges and "went hard" as soon as word got out that he was seeking a permit.

Pedestrian crossing vanishing act: A mysterious pedestrian crossing appeared in Collingwood overnight and vanished as quickly as it came. The crossing was hand-painted onto the tarmac on Tasman St late last week, and was reportedly used by locals until it was removed by the council. The white lines were painted onto the road in front of Collingwood On the Spot and Collingwood Memorial Hall. Some locals believed it was done by people who had been drinking at Tinky’s, the local tavern. Collingwood On the Spot owner Craig Bishop-Everett says, “There’s a few rumours floating around. A lot of people have been talking about it.”

Local artists put work on display

The Queens Gardens were transformed with colour on Saturday for the annual Queens Gardens Art Exhibition. The exhibition featured everything from paintings, mosaics and garden art, to glass, photography, and woodwork. Averill, who’s inspiration for art came from a trip to Europe. “My husband would be photographing the Colosseum, the Metropolis and all those places but I was just fascinated by the excavated pottery. “When I came home I looked through the all the photos I’d taken and realised, ‘I actually want to paint those’.” The texturising and compound technique she uses for her 3D effect is a trade secret but Averill says one piece will

take her about three weeks. Averill went along to Waimea College evening classes with Sue Creedy to develop her technique. “I didn’t like still life, it’s boring but of course that’s all I do now,” she says with a laugh. Committee member Heather Plowman says everyone drifting through loved the interaction with the artists. “They’ve really liked being able to talk to the artist and hear all the little stories behind each piece.”

The area has now been cleared and stands ready for new sheds but Rex says it will take some time before the new workshop is up and running. The fire brigade has yet to confirm the cause of the fire but Rex says they suspect it may have been an electrical fault. From showjumping to barrel racing, local riders give rodeo a crack Showjumping riders are used to going over obstacles but this Saturday a group of adventurous Nelson equestriennes will be flat out racing around them as they make their debuts at the Richmond Rodeo. Lynley Wilson, Felicity Hart, Linda Cotton and Angela Cotton have entered the barrel racing event at Saturday’s annual rodeo at the A and P Showgrounds. Lynley says they were inspired to enter the barrel racing after watching the event at last year’s Richmond Rodeo and now, after just one practise run, they are ready to go. “I went to the rodeo with Linda and her mother Colleen and we were all a bit disappointed there were no locals in the event,” Lynley says. “So we said ‘let’s get a group of our showjumping friends and do it next year’. “Then I forgot about it until I went to Perth at Christmas and went to a rodeo there and got all excited about it again. We thought we might have been too late to enter but Tina (club secretary Tina Angus-Phyn) said ‘no problem just enter on the day’ so we’ll give it a go.” Although the self-confessed rodeo greenhorns have been showjumping for years, Lynley says they realise barrel racing will be a whole new ball game. “It’s going to be a big challenge because it’s completely different from showjumping. We are used to going over things and now we are going to have to go around them. “Barrel racers also need to be able to stop in a hurry and turn quickly and go fast again. We’ve only had one practise run going around a barrel at home but we’re all really excited about giving it a go - we are hoping to bluff our way through it.” Lynley, Linda, Angela and Felic-

The Richmond Rodeo has always been a popular stop on the summer rodeo circuit, attracting many of the country’s riders and ropers and Tina says this Saturday’s edition is no exception. Tina says the rodeo will also feature a special guest, Australian Rodeo Queen Latoya Wards. Although the glamorous barrel racer will not be competing, she will be out meeting and greeting spectators. There will also be prizes for the best dressed pre-school and primary school-aged children in the Miss Cowgirl and Mr Cowboy contest. Tina says the contest will start at about 2pm and contestants can enter on the day. The rodeo will be held at the A & P Showgrounds in Richmond starting at 1pm. Tickets are available at the Richmond Mall or at the gate with entry costing $15 for adults, $10 for college students, intermediate children $5, primary school children free and family passes $45. A post-rodeo party, featuring the band Kicks will be held at Armadillos on Queen St in Richmond

With a great Christmas season done and dusted, I would like to thank all our customers for their support during the last year and I look forward to a fantastic 2016. During the busy Christmas season both foot traffic and retail sales were up on last year. • During the month of December, Richmond Mall allowed customers an extended four hour limit in the car park. January will now see the parking limit go back to the usual three hours. Please take note of this change to avoid any unwanted parking fines. • Phase two and three of the car park walkway are in progress. Phase two will see the walkway connect to the eastern entrance while construction on other safe zones linking pedestrians to Richmond Mall shops will also begin. Richmond Mall management thanks customers for their patience during this disruption. • The Richmond Mall is currently home to a display of skateboard art, created by students from around Nelson Tasman. Customers are encouraged to vote for their favourite board and go in the draw to win $100 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers. • The Mall is also accommodating an electric trike display from Motueka High School. A group of students built the trike before taking it down to Christchurch to participate in the Mike Pero Speedway. Richmond man celebrates 101st birthday Oakwoods’ resident Hastings Bullock celebrated his birthday last Thursday week and it was a very special one with Hastings turning 101. Friends and family gathered at the Richmond retirement village to mark the occasion with a cake and birthday wishes and while Hastings wasn’t able to talk to the Waimea Weekly, his son Tony was able to share a small part of his long and happy life. The oldest of two brothers and a sister, Hastings was born and raised in Christchurch to parents Garnet and Elsie Bullock. He was educated at Christchurch Boys High School before going on to become an accountant. Hastings’ war service began in 1940 when he joined the Navy and travelled to England. There he trained as a sailor was sent to the North Atlantic convoys, before returning to take the next step up and become an officer. As an officer, Hastings was sent to East Africa, working with motor launches and patrol boats. He returned to New Zealand in 1943 and spent the rest of the war operating motor launches and patrol vessels out of Wellington. It was through his war service that Hastings met his wife, Patricia Adams, who worked in communications at the naval headquarters in Wellington. They married in Christchurch in 1945 and continued to live there with a family of three, Tony, Susan and Judith, until the early 80s when they began their

After living in two other homes in Nelson, Hastings and Patricia finally moved to a villa within the Oakwoods Retirement Village in 1998. After Patricia passed away in 2000, Hastings continued to live in the same villa until June last year, he was over 100. While there is no secret answer to living a long and happy life, Hastings’ family believe his attitude has been an important part of him reaching 101. “He’s never grizzled,” says Tony. “He’s not a grumbler and he could turn any situation to his advantage. I think he

would have managed for a while in the community but the Oakwoods Village environment here gives access to a large number of people in similar situations and he’s made a lot of friends. He’s been well-loved and well-respected by all, he’s had strong friendships and good times. He loves his family and has always taken an interest in his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren,” he says. “He’s just been a marvellous man, he really has. He’s welcomed our partners into the family, he’s got a tremendous relationship with his grandchildren and he’s just been somebody we look up and would like to be.”

Bowlers representing Nelson The Outdoor League bowls has started again after the Christmas New Year break. All is going well. The Richmond Bowling Club has nearly finished all their club championships, with new champions found. The Richmond Bowling Club also has a good number of bowlers representing Nelson in the

challenge against Marlborough on the Sunday, January 24. The men play in Nelson with the ladies travelling to Blenheim. It may not be the America’s Cup but the Nelson Regatta, alongside the inaugural Liquorland Top of the South Trailer Yacht and Sports Boat Regatta, are set to create an exciting week of racing in the Tasman Bay. The region is proud of its long-standing nautical history, with yacht races dating back to European settlement. Nelson’s affair with the sea as a means of leisure began in 1843 when the first official yacht race was staged, setting off a chain of events which led to the establishment, in 1857, of New Zealand’s earliest yacht club, the Nelson Yacht Club. With the accessibility of the Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson truly is a sailor’s dream location, and from January 22 to January 27 it will set the scene for a celebration of New Zealand Yachting thanks to hosts Tasman Bay Cruising Club and all their generous sponsors. By introducing the Liquorland Top of the South Regatta for the trailer boats, Tasman Bay Cruising Club hope to give out-of-town sailors the chance to spend some time cruising around the Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park, with some friendly competition thrown in, of course. Racing for the trailer boats kicks off with an invitation race on Friday night. Snorkellers get a close look at marine life

Around 140 people turned up at Cable Bay on Sunday to experience life under the sea. The community guided snorkel day was organised by Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) in order to educate people on the creatures that call the sea home and spark an interest in people for our local marine reserves. “What we want to do is give people a marine experience up close underneath the water in their local environment and raise their awareness of the Horoirangi marine reserve. It’s also about getting local people to develop a connection with the marine environment, with the idea that with that connection, perhaps there will be more care and interest in their marine environments,” says or-

ganiser Megan Wilson. Experience was no barrier with kids and adults of all ages taking part, under the guidance of practiced local divers from the Nelson Underwater Club. “We were actually going to do the Cable Bay walkway and we saw this advertised and I thought it would be quite a cool idea. It seemed like a really nice and easy set up to have a go,” says Kanishka Jayasena of Stoke. A total of 154 people were involved in the day including the guides and other volunteers. The Cable Bay snorkel day was one of many that are being held throughout the country thanks to EMR, Sunday’s event made possible with additional support from Whenua Iti Outdoors, Port Nelson, Nelson Underwater Club and the Department of Conservation.

The Nelson Striders competed in their annual half marathon and 10km event up Maitai Valley over the weekend. The unique event was established after members of the group, who were out on a Sunday morning jog up the Maitai Valley in 1994, came dangerously close to disaster after encountering a wild boar. Runners must estimate their time over the 21.1km distance up the valley and whoever guesses closest takes home the trophy. Around 110 people took part in the half marathon and 10km, several of them from outside Nelson and even New Zealand. This year the winner of the Trevor Ruffell Tusk Trophy, aka The Boar’s Jaw was Nelson’s Simon Leaning, who was just three seconds off his estimated time. Second place went to Amber Lawson from North Canterbury with 14 seconds, followed by Nelson’s Kimble Rawson with 15 seconds. In the 10km event, Lizzie Tai of Motueka took out first place with the exact time, followed by Nelson’s Maria Hillier with seven seconds and a draw between Iona Fitchett and Jeff Leckey for third place with eight seconds.

The Tasman Bay Snapper Classic is coming up on February 20 and organiser Troy Dando says an awesome response from sponsors has provided a top prize of a boat, motor and trailer worth more than $10,000. It will go to the competitor who catches closest to the average weight of all the snapper weighed in on the day. "As long as you catch a snapper you have a chance of winning it," Dando says. "Most average weight snapper competition winners have fish in the 1.5-3 kilogram range and, as we know, Tasman Bay is full of that size snapper at the moment." He predicted a fish weighing 1.98kg would win the boat. As well as the boat prize of a DNA 300 dinghy with an 8hp Honda outboard and trailer, there are also prizes for the 1st-15th heaviest snapper, the heaviest kingfish, heaviest kahawai, gurnard and

Young Richmond athletes enjoyed a successful three days at the South Island Colgate Games at the Saxton Field Athletics Track, winning 16 medals including eight golds. Athletics Richmond was one of the biggest clubs at the games, fielding 69 of the 850 athletes at the three day children’s meeting that concluded on Sunday. But they weren’t there just to make up the numbers, recording an impressive strike rate especially on the track where runners Coby Springer, Jacob Neal and Adam Stack were in top form. Coby Springer won gold in the grade 11 boys 100m, 200m and long jump, Jacob Neal won the grade 11 boys 800m and 1500m while Adam Stack won the grade 12 boys 100m and shot put. Coby also won bronze in the high jump while Adam won silver in the high jump and discus. Lilly Zwart produced the other golden performance, winning the grade 10 girls high

jump. The gold medal count would have been even higher if star sprinter Isabel Neal had not withdrawn from the games due to a foot injury. Athletics Richmond’s under-10 members also excelled, winning 45 pennants for finishing first, second or third. Under-10 athletes don’t have official finals and receive pennants for placing in their races instead of medals. “I’m very, very proud of the club,” committee member Jason Stack says. “They all trained hard for this event and that showed in the results.” Julia Kersten won silver in the grade 10 girls 800m, Rosie Mirfin won bronze in the 12 girls 1200m walk, Samantha Hardie won bronze in the 14 girls 400m and discus, Georgia Nicholls, Coby Springer, Marco Fon, Meg Coakley and Isabella Lawson teamed up for silver in the 12

medley relay, Paris Hart, Zoe Stevens, Jacob Neal, Isabella Devereux and Daniel Franklin won silver in the 11 medley relay and Sarah Lane, Pip Coakley, Meg Coakley and Hayley Bond won bronze in the 12 girls 4x100m relay. Richmond athlete Micayla Whiti, aged 9, competed at the North Island Colgate Games the previous weekend and won first place pennants for the 60m, 100, 200m, long jump and discus. The Motueka Amateur Athletics Club won seven medals with talented middle distance runner Eloise Beattie winning its only gold in the grade 13 girls 1500m. Athletics Nelson won six medals, with its gold coming from the grade 11 boys 4x100m relay team of Ben Walker, James Johnson, Ben Mercer and Sam Newson.

Nelson riders Ingrid Richter and Cameron Jones won their second consecutive gold medals in the second round of the New Zealand Mountainbike cross-country series, held in Napier at the weekend. Ingrid won the elite women’s race in 1hr 26min 53sec while Cameron took out the under-17 race in 58min 14.5sec. Ingrid and Cameron last week won their first round races at Rotorua. Richmond’s Henry Jaine was second in the under-23 race behind Jack Compton, finishing second in 1hour 30min 39.3sec. Round three will be staged in Wanaka on February 21 after Nelson hosts the Giant Top Gun event from Friday January 29 to Monday February 1. Top Gun features a downhill, cross-country and enduro race with $7000 in prizes including $1000 each for the first female and male Top Gun racers decided over at least two of the events.

SPEEDWAY: Nelson's 1NZ driver Shane Harwood missed the final cut of 23 drivers for the World Superstock championships at Rotorua on Saturday. Shane was eliminated in qualifying along with a number of other top drivers. Palmerston North's Scott Joblin won the final. RUGBY SEVENS: The Tasman Makos womens team has claimed the bowl trophy at the national sevens competition in the Bay of Plenty over the weekend. The women’s side beat Wairarapa Bush 12-10 in the final, which is a play-off for 9th and 10th in the competition. The mens side was also competing in the bowl competition after some early losses in the main draw. After winning its bowl quarter-final, Tasman was beaten 24-7 by Hawke’s By in the bowl semi-final.

SEA SWIM: Race three of the Clements Windows and Doors Endurance Sea Swim series is being held this Sunday with the Clements Ironman Challenge over 3.8km. Swimmers start from Tahunanui Beach at 10.30am and head to the dolphin navigation marker, turning south to follow the toe of Haulashore Island around to the second navigation marker to the south of the island, then back to the beach. Competitors in the short swim of 1300m will walk to the Richardson St steps, swimming straight back to Tahunanui Beach, starting exactly 30 minutes after the 3.8km race.

Proposed Plan Change 58: Wakefield Strategic Review This Plan change provides for the future expansion of Wakefield’s Residential and Rural Residential zones. It includes revised policies, zoning and area maps and rule changes to manage flood hazard risk in industrial zones, cross-boundary effects and to facilitate housing choice. There are also minor changes to indicative roads and walkways. Proposed Plan Change 59: Residential Zone Coverage This Plan change reviews and updates the building coverage rule in the residential zone, allowing higher maximum building coverage in Richmond, Motueka, Brightwater and Wakefield, subject to stormwater detention. It also clarifies the term “site coverage”. Submissions Any person may make a submission on any part of any of the proposed Changes. Submissions can be sent to the Environmental Policy Manager, Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 to be accepted by Council until 4.00 pm on Tuesday 2 February 2016. Submission forms are available as indicated below under “Availability of Proposed Changes”. Submissions must be in writing, clearly indicating support or opposition to the provisions, the decision that the submitter wishes the Council to make (with reasons), whether or not the submitter wishes to be heard in support of the submission and an address for service or contact address. Consideration of Proposed Amendments After submissions have closed, the Council will publish a summary of all decisions requested by submitters. There will be a further period of 10 working days within which further submissions in support of or opposition to those submissions made may be sent to the Council. The Council will then hold hearings on all submissions and all submitters may be heard. After the Council considers the submissions and makes its decisions, any submitter who is not satisfied with the decision has the right of appeal to the Environment Court. Availability of Proposed Amendments The proposed amendments are available to view at the Council’s Richmond, Motueka and Takaka libraries or online at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/trmp-proposed-changes.
